Abstract
This research aimed to identify and analyze the types and social functions of slang words used by the protagonist, David Martinez, in the series "Cyberpunk: Edgerunners". The study employed a qualitative descriptive method to examine how these slang expressions were utilized within a dystopian environment. Data were collected by transcribing the dialogues from the English-dubbed version of the ten episodes. These transcripts were then analyzed using the theoretical framework established by Allan and Burridge (2006). The findings revealed four types of slang used by the protagonist: Fresh and Creative, Flippant, Imitative, and Clipping. Imitative slang was the most dominant type, accounting for 42.86% of the data. Furthermore, these slang expressions served four social functions: to initiate relaxed conversations (42.86%), to show intimacy (28.57%), to address someone (14.29%), and to create an intimate atmosphere (14.29%). In conclusion, the use of slang was not merely decorative but functioned as an essential practical tool for the character's survival, psychological adaptation, and social integration into the edgerunner community within Night City.
