This case study analyzed the student debate in National University Debating Championship 2016 by using the Toulmin’sArgument Model (1989). The writer adopted Graphical Argument Analysis to identify argument pattern, relations between the arguments’ pattern, and the plausibility of the arguments. The transcript of a debate, with the motion ‘whether the separatist movement in Eastern Indonesia should unite, take arms and conduct a violent revolution to suceed from the Republic of Indonesia”, was analyzed qualitativelyand the results of this study suggested that the debaters deployed only five argument elements from the six argument elements and six argument relationsof Toulminargumentationmodels. They are claim, data, warrant, backing, and rebuttal elements and relations. Finally, this study revealedthat the Closing Opposition’s argument was the most plausible argument among the arguments. It is suggested that student debaters adopt the concept of Toulmin Model to develop their argument. Others such as teachers and debate adjudicators can implement the framework to analyze students’ debate.This study is hoped to make a contribution to the relevant studies such as discourse analysis, public speaking and language learning. It is also expected to give insight to anyone who is interested in conducting followed-up research in the same field.
