Abstract

This study investigated the students’ strategies in justifying and persuading the adjudicators in order to win the National University Debating Championship (NUDC) using a critical discourse analysis proposed by Van Dijk. The corpus of the study was the transcript of the debate among Atmajaya University, Gadjah Mada University, Indonesia University and Brawijaya University over the motion of This House Believe That Indonesia should Establish a Truth and Reconciliation Commission for the 1998 Tragedy which is in British Parliamentary Debate System as the main data to find out and discuss about it. The result of the analysis showed that Gadjah Mada University had good strategies in justifying and persuading the adjudicators with 10 frameworks and they could win the debate, meanwhile Indonesia University only used 9 frameworks, Atmajaya University 8 frameworks, and Brawijaya University 7 frameworks and it indicated that the team has less knowledge in giving the justification and persuasion during the debate. The findings of this study could be conducive to expand students’ critical thinking abilities in comprehension and production of language especially when they join the debate competition.
