Abstract

The Decline Of Heavy Metals In Wastewater Of Electroplating Industry Using Chitosan-PVA Composite Membrane (Hilda Rosalina, 2014, 73 pages, 16 tables, 29 pictures, 4 enclosure) Wastewater in Electroplating industry can damage the environment and harmful to human health. Electroplating industry wastewater generally contain heavy metals. Metals contained in the wastewater can be removed in many ways one of them using a composite membrane of chitosan and PVA mixture to be used in the reduction of heavy metals. The purpose of this research was to create a composite membrane using chitosan and PVA mixtures of varying composition, determine the ability of the membrane to decrease the content of heavy metals (Cu, Ni, and Fe), determine the optimum contact time, and, determine the Langmuir isotherm equation. To determine the performance of the membrane, the flux and rejection test using “dead end” membrane test using variated pressure range 0.5-2.5 bar and the contact time of 5-30 minutes for determine rejection. Whereas to determine membrane pore has done analyzed using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). In the flux measurements, the best flux get in membrane with ratio 75%:25% 6.272 L/m2.Hour use pressure 0,5 bar, while the best result of rejection test on the decline of copper and nickel metal content with the membrane ratio 75%:25% and for iron the best result of rejection test with membran ratio 80%: 20%. The optimum contact time resulting in a membrane with the ratio 80%:20% is 15 minutes, while the ratio 75%:25% rejection was the best produced in 5 minutes contact time. Langmuir isotherm equation is the highest in the nickel because the correlation coefficient 0,997. Key Words: Composite Membran, Chitosan-PVA Composite, Electroplating Industry
