Abstract

Oil palm shell waste is generated from the processing of palm oil industry that utilization is not maximized. Processing of oil palm shell as activated carbon is one easy way to add economic value. This study aims to determine the effect of H3PO4 concentration and activation time on the quality of activated carbon from oil palm shell. Authoring process carried out at a temperature of 550 0C and the concentration of 10,15,20 and 25% H3PO4. Characteristics that meet quality standart SNI-06-3730-1995 produced a concentration of 25% H3PO4 produce activated carbon with the condition of the water content of 3.76%, 4.22% ash content, volatile matter content of 10.88%, iodine number 877.71 mg / gand by using isoterm Freundlich, adsorbate number that adsorbed 0,3289 mg/g; 0,1179 mg/g; and 0,0360 mg/g.The activated carbon is then applied to the POME (Palm Mill Effluent) with reduced levels of oil palm from COD 62.72 mg / l to 25.088 mg / l, BOD of 40.768 mg / l to 35.245 mg / l, TSS 2 mg / l does not decline and pH from 6.4 to 6.5.
