Abstract

This research was conducted to find out the factors of anxiety in public speaking of sixth-semester English Department students of Sriwijaya Polytechnic. This research used the descriptive quantitative method. The techniques of collecting the data used questionnaires by using readymade a final version of the PSCAS (public speaking class anxiety scale) by Yaikhong and Usaha (2012). The questionnaires consist of communication apprehension factor, test anxiety factor, fear of negative evaluation factor, and comfort in using English factor. The population was sixth-semester students in the English Department of Sriwijaya Polytechnic in 2019. There were 43 participants who answered the questionnaires using a random sampling technique. The results revealed that 67.44% of students experienced a medium level of public speaking anxiety. Then the factors that caused that anxiety were a lack of preparation, lack of motivation, limited vocabulary, lack of self-confidence, embarrassment, negative thinking, fear of mistakes, difficulty coordinating movement, and lack of experience.
