Abstract

This study aimed to identify the evolution of Red’s character development through a narrative language approach in The Angry Birds Movie (2016) and The Angry Birds Movie 2 (2019). The research focused on examining how Red’s dialogue, tone, speech functions, lexical choices, and interpersonal communication contribute to the construction of his emotional, psychological, social, and leadership development throughout both films. Rather than analyzing character development solely through narrative events, this study emphasizes the role of language in portraying Red’s transformation across different stages of the narrative. This study employed a qualitative descriptive method using a narrative language approach. The data were collected through documentation, including dialogues, scenes, and character interactions from both films. The analysis was guided by theories of narrative language, character development, and meaning-making to examine how linguistic features reflect Red’s evolving identity and relationships within the narrative. The findings reveal that Red’s character development is communicated through continuous changes in his narrative language. In the first film, his dialogue develops from defensive, sarcastic, and emotionally reactive expressions to persuasive, cooperative, and leadership-oriented communication, reflecting improvements in emotional regulation and interpersonal relationships. In the second film, his language evolves from hesitant and insecure responses to reflective, empathetic, and collaborative discourse, demonstrating greater psychological maturity and effective leadership. These changes in dialogue, tone, and communication strategies indicate that Red’s development is conveyed not only through his actions but also through the language he uses throughout the narrative. The study concludes that narrative language plays a significant role in constructing character development and maintaining narrative continuity. It also demonstrates that animated films provide valuable material for narrative language analysis by illustrating how dialogue functions as a meaning-making resource in cinematic storytelling.
