Abstract

This research explored the figurative language found in the lyrics of Exmilitary, the debut mixtape by Death Grips. Using a qualitative descriptive method, the study identified and analyzed various types of figurative language, including metaphor, hyperbole, symbolism, personification, simile, paradox, irony, metonymy, and idiom, and examined how they contributed to the meaning of the lyrics. The findings revealed 113 instances of figurative language across the lyrics. Metaphor was the most dominant type with 40 occurrences, followed by hyperbole, personification, symbolism, simile, paradox, irony, metonymy, and idiom. The analysis showed that these figurative expressions played an important role in conveying the meaning of lyrics related to the themes about rebellion, violence, psychological instability, addiction, social criticism, technological anxiety, alienation, and personal empowerment. The findings provided a deeper understanding of how figurative language shaped the lyrical characteristics of experimental hip-hop and contributed to the artistic identity of Exmilitary. This study also encouraged further research on literary elements in modern music.
