Abstract

This study aimed to analyze the types and functions of slang found within the "Spider-Man 2" movie script. The research applied a descriptive qualitative method to examine how these informal language expressions were utilized within social contexts and character interactions. The data for this study were collected from the dialogues in the "Spider-Man 2" movie script, which were obtained by watching the film and retrieving the written text from the Script Slug website. The identified slang was classified and analyzed based on the theoretical framework proposed by Allan and Burridge (2006). The findings revealed five types of slang used by the characters: Fresh and Creative, Flippant, Imitative, Acronym, and Clipping. Imitative slang was the most dominant type. Furthermore, the characters used slang for several functions: to address someone, initiate relaxed conversations, express impressions, reveal anger, and humiliate others. Revealing anger emerged as the most frequently used function, as the characters relied heavily on imitative slang to express intense emotions and manage high-tension situations during conflicts. In conclusion, these language practices functioned as natural communicative strategies for the characters to express their emotions, establish intimacy, and build relationships with one another.
